Users Discontinuing Slimming Jabs Regain Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

New research reveals that people who come off popular GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who stop conventional lifestyle plans.

Research printed in a prominent medical journal points out that while overweight individuals can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Individuals buying such drugs need to be cognizant of the potential of quick weight regain when the medication concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain means a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about a year and a half.

Weighing Approaches

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of these new drugs with older methods.

Scientists note that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually see a slower weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Explaining the Fast Rebound

Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the injections accounts for the heightened regain.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Disease?

The NHS suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians say that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the therapy is often long-term.

This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "underscore the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Accounts

People who have discontinued the jabs explain a powerful return of appetite.

"I experienced a trigger activating and you're instantly starving," said one woman.

This challenge is worsened if users have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Significant Use

Figures show that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest being substantial.

  • Use is more common among females compared to men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians emphasize that while the jabs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success relies on combined lifestyle changes.
