Trump's Woke Alarm Misses Europe's True Danger: Technological Stagnation.

The recent US security policy document presents a flawed view of Europe. The document asserts that open-border policies and what it terms "progressive" policies pose an grave risk to European civilization. However, this perspective is based on a fundamental misreading of the reality. The true challenge facing Europe is not societal but economic and technological backwardness.

A Glaring Economic Divide Between Europe and the US

Statistics reveal a stark picture. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by 87%, compared to a paltry 13.5% increase for the European Union. During this time, European income per person dropped from over three-quarters to just 50% of the American figure. Strikingly, even Mississippi now has a higher per capita income than major EU nations like France and Italy.

Currently, about half of the world’s 50 largest tech companies are American, while only four are from Europe.

The Innovation Shortfall: A Critical Problem

The growing disparity stems from stronger productivity growth in the United States, fueled by breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The scene of global tech dominance is decidedly American. In the last fifty years, 241 US firms have scaled into enterprises valued at more than $10bn, versus only fourteen in the European continent.

This disparity prompts a vital issue: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and quantum computing, what is the EU positioned? Most analysts agree it is essentially a contest between two between the US and China, with European nations entering at a clear handicap.

Underlying Factors of Europe's Innovation Gap

A number of key reasons explain this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a far deeper and more dynamic system for financing new ventures. The EU has yet to establish a true unified investment market, which limits the growth potential of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided rules hinder European business. A American entrepreneur can launch a product under one set of laws to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a bigger population, is split among twenty-seven separate regimes, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In some EU nations, business failure was once met with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's chronic underinvestment in defense has weakened its ability in breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Hopefulness

In spite of these hurdles, there are causes for optimism. Policymakers are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have started to advance serious reform. Key reports on EU competitiveness and the internal market point to the need for major changes.

With the right incentives and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths could support far greater levels of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent still possesses significant advantages: high-quality workforce, top-tier schools and universities, and premier labs. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these foundations have the potential to unleash a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if Europe does not take the lead in creating cutting-edge tech, it can still significantly boost economic output by adopting and adapting advancements from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now faces a decisive crossroads. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". To date, the continent's technological decline has been gradual. However, if it fails to take bold steps to address its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could give way to a sudden and irreversible loss of global economic relevance.
