The artist has donated the full amount of his £25,000 award cash to the MVT, which functions to save the Britain's independent concert spaces.

Fender was given the prize on mid-October as his third album People Watching was named the outstanding release of the past year.

He has opted to donate the funds to the Music Venues Trust, in recognition of the essential function grassroots venues fulfilled in his beginning days.

"As an artist couldn't be pursuing my current career if it weren't for all the performances I performed around the region, and further afield, when I was starting out," stated Sam Fender. "These spaces are legendary, but they are struggling."

From early 2023 onward, more than 150 of these venues have permanently closed – approximately 16 percent of the whole industry in the UK.

Over the past year, top acts including Pulp, Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all supported the Music Venues Trust in its initiatives to keep the scene afloat, by applying a small levy to their ticket prices, which benefits local stages.

He also took part, generating more than £100,000 on his live tour to support numerous grassroots venues across Britain.

The donation supported locations that were confronting imminent closure due to difficulties caused by flooding, fires and personal losses, as well as regulatory hurdles, legal disputes and neighbor objections.

Other venues obtained monetary aid in improving facilities and sound and lighting systems that positively impacted artists and audiences.

"The concept that money from shows in large arenas helps the local stages, where it begins for performers like me, is just logical," Fender has commented.

He is far from the only musician to give his Mercury Prize funds to worthy causes.

In the band earned the trophy in 1996 for their album the album, lead singer Jarvis Cocker stated that the act would contribute their winnings to the charity War Child.

In 2002, rapper and singer she divided her bounty across a few organizations, such as the NSPCC and a charity for Sickle Cell.

"I also donated a thousand pounds to Highgate Newtown, to their classes, because I did gymnastics when I was younger and they lacked new equipment," she shared with a publication.

In recent years, they gave their prize money to the youth organization that nurtured their group, as well as other local music groups.

Also 1994 winners M People donated their prize to a charity for MS after a friend was identified with the illness.

"Winning was ample," said singer Heather Small. "The cash was the cherry on top but we didn't require the bonus, because we had the cake. So our victory touched somebody else's life."

Recently, the trust revealed it had protected two local spots in that region, by placing them under local control.

One venue in that area and the other in the city were acquired under the community ownership program, which is backed by a national body and music fans who buy "stakes" in the properties.
