A bettor earned a substantial sum by predicting the removal of Venezuela's president immediately preceding it was made public, raising questions about potential gains made from confidential information of the event.
Bets placed on the crypto-platform, a blockchain-based service, that the Venezuelan president would be out of power by the close of the month surged in the period preceding President Donald Trump declared on the weekend that Maduro had been apprehended.
A particular user, which registered on the site recently and took four positions, all on political events in Venezuela, earned over $436K from a starting bet of over $32,000.
The identity is unknown. The anonymous account had only a cryptographic address for identification.
Platform data shows that traders put the odds of the president's removal at just under 7% in the afternoon of Friday, January 2nd.
Yet the market's assessment had jumped to over 10% by the end of the day and skyrocketed in the first hours of January 3rd, suggesting a rapid movement in market sentiment just before the official statement was made.
"This particular bet has all the signs of a trade based on confidential knowledge," commented Dennis Kelleher.
Several of other traders also profited large payouts from predicting the capture.
Some lawmakers are starting to take note.
Proposed legislation introduced on Monday aims to prohibit government employees from participating on forecasting platforms if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a wager.
Prediction markets have surged in popularity in the United States, with traders able to bet on everything from sports to political events.
Prediction markets encountered regulatory challenges under the Biden administration. However it has found a more favorable environment during the current presidency.
Trading on insider information is a crime in the securities markets, but there are less oversight in the event betting space.
A spokesperson for Kalshi said their site "strictly forbids insider trading of any form."
